Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma. Researchers have not been able to determine how asbestos fibers reach the lining of the heart in the rare cases of pericardial mesothelioma. Research studies have reported that a number of pericardial mesothelioma patients also had pleural mesothelioma, and asbestos exposure was identified as the trigger in those cases.
