Not buying Roundup doesn’t mean you’re not exposed

You know that the chemical companies argue that Roundup and similar solutions, which contain glyphosate, are safe for people. They claim that the chemicals only kill plants. Yes, they’re specifically designed to be lethal, but not to you.

All the same, you have seen the debate about whether or not Roundup causes cancer and other serious health complications. You decide that it’s not worth the risk. You stop buying Roundup. Does that mean you’re safe?

Prior exposure

Maybe, but maybe not. You have a lot to consider.

For one thing, you have to keep in mind that you’ve already been exposed if you used it in the past. Yes, stopping when you learn about the danger is wise, but it does not eliminate that exposure. Cancer takes a long time to present itself, in many cases, and you also have other factors like what symptoms you get and how proficient your doctor is at diagnosing the disease. Even if you don’t have it yet, that exposure in the past could still lead to cancer in the future.

Exposure from food

Another potential issue is exposure in the food you eat. One thing that people have protested in the past is the use of Roundup and similar chemicals in industrial agriculture, but it continues to happen. You should always clean your food, even if it appears clean when you buy it, to make sure you know exactly what you’re eating. Even then, you can ingest chemicals in food from restaurants or food that you cook at home.

Exposure in the air

On top of that, even if you never use Roundup again yourself and you grow all of your own food so that you know it’s safe, not everyone around you is going to do the same thing. If you live by a factory farm, they may use these types of substances on their plants, potentially putting them into the air and the water supply. If you have a neighbor who uses Roundup in their yard, you could still get exposed to it even if you don’t use it yourself.

There is a reason that some experts have said everyone has been exposed to dangerous chemicals at one time or another. It is very hard to avoid, even when you know what to avoid and you work harder at it than the average person in North Carolina.
